Learning to understand and answer WH questions is a big step in a young child’s language development. But when it comes to toddlers and preschoolers—especially those with speech and language delays—it can be hard to find materials that are truly at their level.
That’s why we created the WH Questions Speech Therapy: Where Questions activity. This simple, beginner-level resource is designed to meet little learners right where they’re at.
Why WH Questions Matter
WH questions—who, what, where, when, and why—help children learn how to think, respond, and participate in conversations. They’re also essential for developing social and academic communication.
But for early learners, especially autistic children or those with communication delays, WH questions can feel confusing or overwhelming. That’s why it’s important to start with just one type of question at a time and keep things as concrete and familiar as possible.

A Simple Start: “Where” Questions
This resource focuses only on basic “where” questions, without layering in tricky concepts like prepositions or spatial language. The goal is simple understanding.
Each of the 12 activity cards includes a visual and a question like:
- “Where do you sleep?”
- “Where do you put socks?”
- “Where do you take a bath?”
These are everyday routines and locations that young children already recognize, which helps boost confidence and comprehension.

Designed for Little Learners
Whether you’re a speech-language pathologist, an early childhood educator, or a parent working on language at home, this set makes it easy to build WH question practice into your daily routines.
You’ll get:
- 12 developmentally appropriate “where” question cards
- A data sheet to track receptive (understanding) and expressive (spoken) responses
This activity is perfect for circle time, speech sessions, or one-on-one practice.
