Description

Have you noticed that your students are coming into school more dysregulated than ever? This Calming Kit is a great addition to your Calming Corner. If you are a parent, are you needing some visuals and strategies to help with self-regulation at home? This is for you too!

If you are like me, you have needed to use more co-regulation techniques in your early childhood special education classroom (early elementary too!). You may wonder, “how can I start teaching my young autistic students/child how to self-regulate?”. This calm down kit has a variety of visual tools to help you get started.

For many 3 and 4 year old non-speaking autistic children, self-regulation can be very challenging. One way you can start working on taking “deep breaths”, when the child doesn’t understand what that means, is through blowing activities. This calming kit for your calming corner includes cue cards and ideas to get “blowing” going, which in turn gets the child to naturally take deep breaths.

The visual supports in this calm down kit for special education are geared toward younger children and can be used to build predictable routines. Once you have built predictable routines, some of these self-regulation techniques will become more “automatic” for children. This will help make the transition from co-regulation to self-regulation over time.

The visuals in this resource are editable so you can tailor them to meet your student or child’s specific needs. You can insert pictures of them, or use characters that they love!

The Calming Kit includes:
