This week we are talking “put in” and “take This week we are talking “put in” and “take out” activities for children who are in the exploratory stage of play!

Kids in the exploratory stage of play tend to explore objects and toys through their senses. They may dump toys, throw toys, and mouth objects.

Put in and take out activities are good for adding some structure while meeting the child where they are at. 🥰

🔥 When it comes to fire drills with young autis 🔥 When it comes to fire drills with young autistic children, here are my best tips:

➡️ prep with a social story
➡️ use a wagon for students who will be more relaxed transitioning in one
➡️ bring a bag with a variety of sensory tools and small toys
➡️ use a visual sequence

Drop the words "fire drill" in the comments to grab this story about fire drills. 🙌🏼

If you watched my Instagram reel yesterday, you saw a “put in” activity that you can do with students in this exploratory stage of play.

This one is an example of a “take out” activity! It’s a new toy from @learningresources 💚

This is how I use this type of activity:

➡️ as the student takes each of the scarves out I might label the color. Or model it on their AAC device or with visual cues.

➡️ after they take one out, I take one out and put it to my face and build some anticipation and play peekaboo.

➡️ if the child can’t get one out, I would use the exclamatory word “uh-oh”!!!

If students like to throw in dump, have a little bucket, they can throw these scarves in. Make your own DIY activity with pieces of fabric or scarves and an old Kleenex box.

If you make one or find another activity like this, that you love, send me a DM with the picture! I’d love to see it :-)

So often our young autistic students come to us wi So often our young autistic students come to us with what we think are “no play skills”. Does your student or child dump toys, throw toys and objects, or mouth everything? Well, guess what? That is a developmental stage of play called “exploratory play”.

If your student or child is in this stage of play, there is plenty we can do to nudge them toward functional play. In today’s episode, I’ll be talking about how you can use “put in” and “take out” activities for children in this exploratory stage of play.
